Is Group Therapy for me?

by | Jul 22, 2018 | Uncategorized

“Group therapy is an effective mode of treatment that can help address not only personal issues but also relational dynamics.  Research has shown that group therapy is especially helpful for those seeking help for relationship and family issues.” states Dr. Ed Ng, Director of Counselling Services at Soma.  Dr. Ng’s interest and experience is in family and cultural dynamics, with special attention on personal and cultural narratives. He has taught Multicultural Counselling at Trinity Western University and Introduction to Christian Counselling at Regent College.

“Too often, counselling and healing have been seen as processes that take place separated and isolated from communities.”  With over 20 years of field experience in the school system, church, and counselling in other community-based agencies, clinic director and registered clinical counsellor, Grace Voo states, “Soma’s desire is to see healing happen within communities.  Oftentimes, you may feel like you are the only one struggling — but you’re not.  It can be a relief to hear others discuss what they’re going through, and realize you’re not alone.  Group therapy can provide opportunities for clients to be in community.”

At Soma, we believe that depending on the nature of your problem, group therapy can be an ideal choice for addressing your concerns and making positive changes in your life for this upcoming fall season.  Group members are almost always surprised by how rewarding the group therapy experience can be and how it provides benefits that individual therapy may not.

How Does Group Therapy Work?

Groups at Soma Counselling can involve anywhere from 3-8 individuals led by a trained counsellor.  The group typically meets once every 1-2 weeks for 1.5 hours.  In many cases, the group will meet in a room where the chairs are arranged in a large circle so that each member can see every other person in the group. A session might begin with members of the group introducing themselves and sharing why they are in group therapy. Members might also share their experiences and progress since the last meeting.

Some Reasons to Use Group Therapy

·       Group therapy allows people to receive the support and encouragement of the other members of the group. People participating in the group can see that others are going through the same thing, which can help them feel less alone.  By observing someone successfully coping with an issue, other members can see that there is hope for recovery.

·       Group therapy is often very affordable. Group therapy sessions are usually 80 minutes and only costs $60/session.

·       Group therapy offers a safe place. The setting allows people to practice behaviours and actions within the safety and security of the group.

·       By working in a group, the therapist can see first-hand how each person responds to other people and behaves in social situations. Using this information, the therapist can provide valuable feedback to each client.
