Group Therapy Opportunities

by | Jul 21, 2018 | Uncategorized

Beginning this Fall 2018:

A) Group Therapy with Dr. Ed Ng, M.Div., R.Psych.

This group, led by Dr. Ng, will be focusing on complex family dynamics, culture, and the various difficulties that can stem from them such as anxiety and depression.

Group therapy is an effective mode of treatment that can help address not only personal issues but also relational dynamics.  Research has shown that group therapy is especially helpful for those seeking help for relationship and family issues.

This group will be held weekly (time TBD) at a central Vancouver location (TBA.)  The session fee is $60/session (GST included).  If you are interested, please contact ed@somacounselling.com to schedule a half-hour consultation during which you will discuss with Ed whether you would be a good fit for the group.

The group will be for an initial term of 6 months with a view towards becoming a longer-term group.  The group will be “closed” after the first round of intakes, with new participants added only after consultation with existing group members.  The start date of the group will depend on when a sustainable number of participants have been found.  Meeting times will also depend on participant schedules.

B) Soul Care for Ministry Leaders

This group will focus primarily on a deeper understanding of the self and the impact that ministry has on one physically, emotionally, mentally, socially and spiritually.  This group will be most helpful for ministry leaders, pastors, counsellors, teachers, and other community leaders who are seeking help for burnout, compassion fatigue/vicarious trauma.  It is also suitable for those hoping to find healing and desiring to build resilience for Ministry.

The group will be a closed group.  The group will be educated about confidentiality and discussions of confidentiality will be an ongoing process.  This group is scheduled to be held weekly on Thursday evenings from 800pm-920pm, at our South Vancouver location and is for an initial term of 4 months with a view towards becoming a longer-term group.   The dates are September 27, October 25, November 29 & December 20.

The Group Therapy fee is $240 for 4 sessions ($60/session) is covered by most extended health providers.  If you are interested, please contact grace@somacounselling.com to schedule a half-hour consultation during which you will discuss with Grace whether you would be a good fit for the group.

C) Adjusting to Motherhood:  Group Therapy for Moms

This is a therapy group to support women in their postpartum journey. This group aims to provide a supportive and therapeutic space where moms will learn about and discuss common emotional challenges of motherhood, develop effective coping strategies to reduce distress and improve emotional well-being, and connect with a community of other women to enrich their support network and enhance their postpartum experience.

Group therapy differs from an informal or peer-led mom’s group, meet-up group, or play group by offering a moderated, structured, therapeutic milieu in which theoretically- and empirically-supported treatment is facilitated by a skilled mental health professional. This group therapy combines the benefits of clinical treatment, education, and training in evidence-based strategies to reduce postpartum distress with the power of peer-to-peer support to enrich and enhance the therapeutic experience.

The group is open to women with newborns, infants, toddlers, or early school aged children who are seeking support as they adjust to different roles, routines, and relationships.

The group will be held in South Vancouver and is covered by most extended health providers.  The group therapy fee is $240 for 4 sessions ($60/session).  If you are interested, please contact grace@somacounselling.com to schedule a half-hour consultation during which you will discuss with Grace whether you would be a good fit for the group.
