Training Workshops for Pastors and Church Leadership

We offer training workshops to help ministries support those struggling with mental illness within their congregation.

Practical Shepherding 101

Our Practical Shepherding 101 workshop is an intense practical training for pastors, ministry leaders, and lay ministers that focus on the life of a minister to “Pay careful attention to yourself and your flock” (Acts 20:28).  This workshop can be used for a variety of different events (retreats, meetings, fellowship, core ministry team building, etc).

This workshop will focus on 4 main areas:

1) The Pastor’s Soul:

Ironically, the soul most neglected in the midst of pastoral ministry is often the very soul of the pastor.  This session focuses on the biblical, internal calling of a pastor and how a pastor intentionally cares for his own heart, mind, and soul throughout the rigors of pastoral ministry.

2) The Pastor’s Ministry:

There are so many pressures and demands on the pastor’s schedule.  This session helps highlight the main biblical priorities of every pastor’s ministry and how to discern the daily activities that should primarily take up a pastor’s time.

3) The Pastor’s Family:

Pastors often neglect their families and place them on the altars of their ministries.  This session is designed to call pastors first to shepherd their families before their flock and how a pastor can shepherd his wife and children through the unique challenges they each face with his ministry.

4) The Pastor’s Journey:

This section, pastors will be provided an opportunity to reflect on their journey.  They will be able to listen to honest stories about church ministry and shepherding others.  Participates will hopefully be able to learn more about themselves and gain some insight on their own journey.

This workshop works best with small groups of 4-8 people.

Integrating Psychology and Theology

All people and fields of study are “traditioned.”  The integration of psychology and theology is less about “nuts and bolts” but more about traditioning one’s self and participating in how one’s tradition influences one’s integration.

What Kind of Psychotherapy, and When?

This workshop shows when and how to access mental health services and what to expect from different practitioners.  Describes the main schools of psychotherapy and their emphases in healing practices.  Takes a broad and balanced approach in the recognition that different approaches have usefulness for different issues at different times of life.

Emotional Growth for a Lifetime

This workshop describes emotional growth throughout a person’s lifetime.  Explains why emotional growth and engagement is important for normal psychological development, and introduces ways of raising children in an emotionally healthy manner.

Pastoring for Mental Health

This workshop teaches pastors about some of the bases of mental health issues, introduces ways of identifying struggling congregants and strategies for caring for people with mental health issues.

A Cultural Narrative Psychology of Asian Churches in North America

This workshop defines the term “cultural narrative” and how this applies to understanding how and why Asian churches were formed, their importance for communities of Asian descent, and seeks to uncover some of the difficulties faced by Asian churches in North America in the 21st century.

Integrating Psychotherapy and Christianity

Integrating psychotherapy with the Christian faith first involves the realization that there are many psychotherapies and many different ways that Christians express their faith. This presentation defines terms such as “Christian counselling” and “Biblical counselling”, and attempts to bridge faith and practice by introducing modes of integration such as explicit, implicit, and “plundering the Egyptians.”

The Art of Contemplative Listening in Church Ministry

Listening and witnessing—the heart of spiritual direction—can be experienced through spontaneous creative expression.  This experiential workshop will use the lens of art as a guiding metaphor to allow us to creatively explore God at work in our lives.  Through creative moments, this workshop will invite deep conversations, prayer, meditation, creative writing, painting, reflection & discussions about God’s presence in our midst.

The goal of this workshop is to help ministry workers gain confidence in incorporating creative contemplative practices as they help people access deeper levels of listening and insight.
