Cynthia McCrum

Associate Counsellor/

Registered Social Worker

BSW (UBC), DipCs (Regent College), RSW, BCASW

Cynthia brings over 18 years of experience as a Registered Social Worker, counselling and empowering people from all walks of life to achieve better mental health.

She specializes in working with adolescents, adults, and seniors who are struggling with anxiety, depression, addictions, shame, perfectionism, self-harm, identity, family conflict, burnout, grief, chronic illness and disability. Cynthia understands how difficult it can be to seek help during difficult times; and through acceptance and genuine empathy she provides a safe space for her clients to gain new insight and hope into the challenging areas of their lives. As a social worker, Cynthia also brings a wealth of knowledge in navigating complex systems and accessing community and government resources.

Cynthia encountered Jesus in a profound way during her own prodigal journey in her teen years. It was this encounter that ignited a passion for reaching youth-at-risk and set in motion a vocational calling to social work and a heart for counselling and healing ministry.

She completed her Bachelor of Social Work Degree at UBC in 2002 and received the Marjorie Topping Ellis Award as the top graduating student. Cynthia worked for several years as an addictions and prevention counsellor to adolescents in both community and school based settings. Then to further integrate her faith and vocation, she completed a Graduate Diploma of Christian Studies at Regent College in 2007.  She served many years as a Youth Director mentoring and equipping teens, parents and leaders at a local church and counselled students and family members at a Christian private school. Later, Cynthia continued to expand her Social Work field of practice into the healthcare system and now also provides specialized consultation and counselling to aid the transition of those that find themselves or family members in acute and long-term health care settings. In 2019, she was nominated for the Inspirational Social Worker Award with the British Columbia Association of Social Workers and presented as a panelist at their AGM.

Cynthia counsels primarily from a solution-focused, strength-based, and bio-psycho-social-spiritual approach.  She takes a holistic perspective that accounts for physical, emotional, social, and spiritual aspects of a client’s life while working together with them towards mutually established goals.  The counselling process is a collaboration in which clients find themselves strengthened and empowered with new skills, knowledge and resources. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Emotion Focused Therapy, Attachment Theory, and Family Systems are evidence-based approaches that inform her practice.

As a follower of Jesus, Cynthia’s therapeutic process is grounded in her faith; and she believes that for those who are open to it, integrating spiritual practices can bring deeper healing than psychology alone. As we seek the presence of Jesus in our deepest shame and hurts we find greater freedom from these things. This healing naturally flows into our relationships with others and the church community.

Cynthia is married to Carson, her loving husband of 17 years, and together they are raising 3 wonderful children (that span in years from toddler to teenager). Cynthia is skilled in working with individuals, couples, and families and also enjoys facilitating groups and workshops. She is excited to be on board with the Soma team and looks forward to embarking with you on a journey of growth and change.
